Proximity Detection and Gesture Recognition in the New VW Golf 7 (Facelift)
DGAP-Media / 17.11.2016 / 12:54
Elmos Leads in the Global Proximity Detection and Gesture Recognition
Market
The new Volkswagen (VW) Golf 7 (Facelift) offers the proximity and gesture-
controlled infotainment system 'Discover Pro' as optional feature. For the
first time, the international Volkswagen Group introduces this intuitive
control system. Worldwide, it is the first compact car, which is available
with this gesture control system. Sensors in the VW Golf 7 (Facelift)
detect the appearance of the hand in front of a screen so that the driver
can now use wiping gestures to switch radio stations or move through
playlists. In February/ March 2017, consumers will find the new VW Golf 7
(Facelift) in car dealerships.
The gesture control system earned a positive response in the press. The
major German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) mentions the
"world premiere" of using the gesture recognition technology in the compact
class. Test engineers for the German car magazine 'Autobild' emphasized
that the system recognizes even fast movements without a hitch. The British
newspaper 'The Telegraph' compares the VW gesture recognition system with
the system used in the luxury class modell BMW 7.
Elmos is the global market leader in proximity detection and gesture
recognition technologies. The company builds its integrated circuits (IC)
based on the HALIOS(R) principle (high ambient light-independent optical
system). It is the only process working with true optical compensation. The
immunity to extraneous light and excellent temperature stability of this
technology far exceed the capabilities of the individual components and
therefore almost completely neutralizes parasitic effects in the
photodiode.
At the electronica tradeshow, Elmos experts introduced the most advanced IC
generation for the gesture control technology. By comparison with previous
solutions, the new E909.21 component saves up to 40 % system costs and up
to 50 % in design space. The component uses infrared technology to
recognize the user hand in real-time. In today's markets, it features the
best available extraneous light immunity and automated system calibration.
Infrared technology enables the component to respond to the approach and
movement of a hand in real-time. From all currently marketed gesture
recognition ICs, the Elmos version excels with the best extraneous light
immunity and automated system calibration. Another advantage is the IC's
extended scalability, which makes it adaptable to all commonly used display
sizes and shapes. Elmos engineers also integrated functions to simplify the
system and sensor designs. Thanks to this advancement, the component allows
the fast generation of sensor function patterns. An earlier version of the
new IC is the IC E909.06. For almost five years now, well established OEMs
use the IC E909.06 in various models.
