(Q1 2013: EUR 124.5 mill.) thus being EUR 7.9 mill. or 6.4 % above the value of the first quarter 2013. All segments contributed to sales increase. The occupancy rate of the Group improved to 86.1 % (Q1 2013: 83.9 %) against previous year. Material expenses and depreciation and amortisation were nearly on previous year's level, staff costs and other operating expenses increased moderate. In comparision with the previous year the Group operating result improved by EUR 4.9 mill. from EUR -5.9 mill. to EUR -1.0 mill. The financial result was EUR -1.0 mill. (Q1 2013: EUR -0,8 mill.). The result after tax attributable to shareholders of MediClin AG of the first quarter 2014 improved by EUR 4.8 mill. from EUR -6,5 mill. to EUR -1.7 mill. Considerable improvement of the result of the acute segment The quarterly comparison shows that sales of the post-acute segment of EUR 74.0 mill. was EUR 3.3 mill. and sales of the acute segment of EUR 54.4 mill. was EUR 4.8 mill. or 9.8 % up against previous year's values. The nursing care business area showed sales of EUR 3.3 mill. on previous year's level. Higher sales and less increase of expenses than sales led to result improvements in the two above-named segments. The segment result of post-acute was EUR -1.8 mill. (Q1 2013: EUR -4.2 mill.), the result of the acute segment EUR 3.1 mill. (Q1 2013: EUR 0.1 mill.). In the first quarter of 2014 EUR 5.0 mill. (Q1 2013: EUR 4.8 mill.) were invested in fixed assets (brutto). As of March 31, 2014 cash and cash equivalents were EUR 11.1 mill. (31.12.2013: EUR 10.0 mill.) and the equity ratio was 47,5 % (31.12.2013: 48.1 %). MediClin employed on average 6,364 employees (Q1 2013: 6,352 employees), calculated on the basis of full-time staff, in the first quarter of 2014. Outlook Based on the good start in the new financial year and based on sales and result improvements coming from initiated measurements the Management Board members assume that the target margins of the Group and the segments are achievable.
